What is advocacy?

Advocacy schemes and advocates work together with people to take action to help them say what they want, secure their rights, represent their interests, and obtain the services they are in need of.

Advocacy promotes social inclusion, equality and social justice. MhIST Advocacy is available in the community and in hospital. It is Friendly, Independent, and Confidential.  MhIST provides a nationally recognized quality advocacy service.

Mental Health Advocacy for Older People.

Advocacy is equally valuable for people suffering from dementia as it is for those with other mental health issues. We can be there to support anyone who has mental health issues, from depression, to schizophrenia and dementia. All older people deserve to be treated with dignity and respect and to have their concerns addressed. Older people living in residential nursing homes or hospitals have the same rights as those who live in the community and sometimes you need someone there to help you make your voice heard. An advocate from MhIST may be able to help.

A MhIST advocate may be able to explore the options open to you; attend appointments with you such as Mental Health Review

Tribunals, Reviews, Ward Rounds, and assist you in making your wishes and opinions heard.
