Support for Self-Harm

Self Harm what is it?

Self-Harm can take a number of forms:

  • Physical - Cutting or hurting yourself.
  • Drugs - Abusing drugs of solvents.
  • Food - Starving or binging.
  • Alcohol - Abusing alcohol

Self-Harm is or can be:

  • A sign that something is wrong.
  • A way of surviving.
  • A sign that someone needs understanding and support.
  • A way of expressing powerful feelings.

A coping strategy or safety valve for stress or anxiety.

Self-Harm what it's not:
Self-Harm is not:

  • A sign of deep disturbance or madness.
  • A failed suicide attempt.
  • Designed to manipulate others.

A danger to other people.
You can help someone who self-harms by:

Listening to what he/she has to say.

  • Being understanding.
  • Not being judgmental.

There are plenty of difficulties in stopping self harm but there are possible alternatives to reducing the occurrence of it, such as ..

  • support groups
  • counselling
  • alternate therapies
  • mediation
  • achievement
  • acceptance

Here at MhIST, we run a support group, which holds fortnightly meetings at :

Meditation at MhIST - Monday at 1:00pm

The aim of meditation is to bring inner peace within ourselves and the world in a positive and spiritual way. The world is not a peaceful place and within every soul there is some form of stress of stress and tension. It is essential to create positive and peaceful thoughts to bring peace of minds.

The best way that we can begin the healing process is to alter our thoughts from being negative to positive. The positive discovery about meditation is that we are focusing within our self and becoming free of negativity.

Meditation techniques simply involve a process of transforming yourself and your thoughts by recognising the negative thoughts and learning to change them into positive and peaceful ones.

A MhIST we gather together in a safe and friendly atmosphere to explore relaxation and meditation techniques. It does not require you to lie down but just to sit in a comfortable chair, closing your eyes and experiencing the calm. We listen to uplifting words to a background of soothing music.

The session lasts for about one hour.
